Louis Vuitton (LV) has to adapt to over 50 countries, using its 507 outlets to serve its luxury customers.
How does LV Adapt to Different Countries and Cultures? The keys to LV adapting to different countries are having 507 retail outlets where the luxury customers shop, staying consistent and authentic and gathering feedback from all levels.
There is no easy strategy and LV CEO Michael Burke shared in many interviews the methods LV used to stay relevant in this everchanging environment.
LV Staying Consistent And Authentic
LV CEO, Michael Burke said to TheAtlatntic about staying consistent and authentic:
"It's crucial for luxury brands to be consistent and authentic," he also said. "They become cultural reference points as the world shifts. It's not that they don't take account of cultural forces, but they can't react. They have to be beacons of a certain point of view." LVMH's stock has recovered to the high 30s, a few points from its all-time pre-recession high. In 2010, Louis Vuitton's net profit jumped 73% led by the Asian market. A strong brand reduces business risk precisely because it stands for something more than affordability. Companies without focused brands -- Mitchell named Oldsmobile -- are in danger when affordability is the only selling point, because "somebody builds a cheaper or more convenient product, you're irrelevant." (theatlantic.com)
The key is to be focused on staying relevant because pricing and convenience is a factor even at the luxury brands.
LV Gathering Feedback From All Levels
LV CEO also said to GQ on the change from the triangle system to gathering feedbacks from all levels:
“It used to be a triangle system, with the editors and creative directors at the top of this ivory tower who would decide everything – what the world saw of a brand, but today it’s all flat. It’s democratised, everyone has an opinion and everyone has to be heard.”
One of the ways to stay relevant is to gather feedback from everyone in the company and making the system for feedback as direct as possible.
Open Retail Outlets Where Luxury Customers Shop
Knowing that China is the largest domestic market for luxury goods in the world and accounts for 44% of global demand, LV open its outlet in China strategically such as Xi'an to create maximum awareness and wowing the shoppers within the country.
CLSA and other firms estimate that currently more than half of Chinese luxury spending occurs overseas. Some Chinese tour groups travel to France and Italy for the sole purpose of luxury shopping.
“China is the rising star,” according to Claudia D'Arpizio, a Milan-based partner with Bain & Co., the consultancy. Consumption by Chinese consumers abroad has helped fuel this growth in more mature markets in Europe. (knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu)
To maintain convenience and creating branding for the luxury customers, one of LV's main strategies is to have many stores, around 507 outlets across the world as of 25 Nov 2020 from its website.
