Words & Music Mashup From Masters & Misfits Saturday
AKA Jazz Funk Fest – Rag’n’Bones – Black Shoe Polish
What is Jazz Funk Fest? Imagine an evening of poetry and spoken word performance accompanied by improvisational live musicians in the Beat poetry tradition. This collective is known as Rag’n’Bones. Then add in a rotating selection of local Venice bands such as Black Shoe Polish, Suzy Williams, and Eric Ahlberg’s Jazz Workshop, playing a mix of originals and classic blues/funk/jazz songs.
Rex Butters is Rag’n’Bones’ ring leader, who is often joined by performers Tryg Hanson, Mende Smith and Jamie Virostko and backed by musicians Gerry Fialka, Merritt Evan Raff, etc. Last year, we were treated to Conga poet Julio Rodriguez who opened the show that included an amazing LeadBelly Tribute Band (Eric Ahlberg, SS Jones and friends) that cooked up some tasty delta blues. That’s the melting pot of mastery and misfits that makes up the Jazz Funk Fest.
