Artist Oliver Bell Opening Exhibit at former Zephyr Surf Shop in Santa Monica
Artist and Filmmaker Oliver Bell has his first solo art exhibit – a tribute to skateboarding and beach culture, that opens on October 24 from 6 – 9pm at the former Zephyr Surf Shop 2009 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA 90405.
The location is an ideal one for the art exhibit titled, “Ollie” as it once housed the Zephyr Surf Shop where skateboarding was revolutionized and made known to the world by the Zephyr skate team.
Oliver Bell and ETC Curator, Leslie Heinze visited with Dogtown Original and Artist, Kevin Ancell. Ancell recently returned to Venice with an art show, bringing artistic life to the historic space down the street from Dogtown at 1320 Main Street.
New life has been breathed into these spaces within the change experienced in Venice with common themes centered around the richness of art and history, with an emphasis on the Pacific Ocean Park (P.O.P.) culture. The connectedness of creating art and living ones true nature as artists for the love of it is undeniable. As Ancell says “Everything’s different but the same. Full circles in weird places.”
In addition, Ollie’s work is also inspired by artist and icon, Robert Rauschenberg. He was in residency with Rauschenberg in 2013 and created an experimental piece in the same vein as Rauschenberg with a skateboarding theme. He says, ” Skateboarding mean a lot to me as it does to so many other people. For me, skateboarding was the catalyst for making art.” “Ollie” will also feature images from the Venice Art Wall’s documented in 1997-1998 of works from graffiti artists such as Mear One.
Oliver and his father, Venice Artist, Larry Bell’s collaborative film of Venice from the 1960’s to present day is part of a permanent video installation that can now be seen at the new Kit and Ace store on Abbot Kinney Blvd.
